2003 Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test

Higher Success Rate for ISNA students compared to Peel District and Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Boards

Seventy-six per cent of all grade 10 ISNA High School students, who wrote the test for the first time, passed both reading and writing sections of the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT). We are pleased with these results. While they represent a 5 percent improvement over last year's result, they also compare favourably with both the Peel District School Board (PDSB) and Dufferin Peel Catholic District School Board (DPCDSB).

Successful completion of the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) is a graduation requirement for all students working towards an Ontario Secondary School Diploma. The OSSLT assesses the reading and writing skills included in the expectations of The Ontario Curriculum across all subjects up to the end of Grade 9.

ISNA High Students Feed the Poor

And they [the righteous] feed, for the love of Allah, the indigent, the orphan, and the captive, (Saying), "We feed you for the sake of Allah alone: no reward do we desire from you, nor thanks."

Qur'an 76: 9-10

On February 26, ISNA High Students participated in the Second Harvest's annual Lunch Money Day and raised $50 for homeless shelters. Joining forces with over 242 companies and 39 schools from the GTA, our school contributed to the tremendous success of the campaign, which exceeded its goal of $200, 000. The money raised by our students will provide 150 fresh nutritious meals to women, men and children who are hungry in our communities.  Want to know more about this campaign? 2004 Grade 8 Orientation at ISNA High

There was a hub of activity on March 30, 2004, as Grade 8 students, their parents and teachers from various Islamic schools visited ISNA High for annual Grade 8 Orientation.

Principal' 'Secondary School Diploma Requirement' presentation was a great success; the audience showed their interest by asking in teresting and relevant questions. Guests were impressed by the ISNA High facilities during their school tour. The highlight of the half-day pro-our gram was lunch, when guests enjoyed scrumptious pizza while mingling with ISNA High students and staff.

ISNA Islamic Schools Dinner & Social Event

This event was held on April 25, 2004. Masha' Allah, the guest turnout was excellent, with over 400 people attending. ISNA High's contribution included welcoming remarks by school principal, a PowerPoint presentation  by two of our students, and presentation by others of their Grade 10 Civics projects. Guest speaker Altaf Hussain gave an inspiring speech. Funds received so far as a result of the evening's fundraising total around $11,000, which  will benefit the Elementary and High schools.

Thanks to all the volunteers and staff who made the evening such a success.

ISNA High School Scholarship & Bursary Fund

Funded by generous community members and businesses, the Scholarship & Bursary Fund provides tuition assistance to families in need. Al-hamdulillah, last year the Fund received some $24,000, which enabled many families to provide an Islamic education for their children.

Unfortunately, the Fund has been depleted and new donations are urgently needed. We have begun active fundraising efforts, with student volunteers staffing an information booth after Salat ul-Jumu`ah and soliciting do-nations from prayer attendees. Want to help this worthy cause? Talk to Sr. Solange in the school office today!

Independent Learning Centre: Student Resources

TVOntario's Independent Learning Centre (ILC) provides invaluable online resources to students, including
Ask a Teacher and CareerMATTERS.

Ask a Teacher

The Ask a Teacher chat is a free online service that connects Ontario students with teachers in a virtual classroom. More than 1,000 exercises and likes are also available at the site, to help students practise for EQAO exams, get homework tips and tricks, and lean writing, study and online research skills. Ask a Teacher was developed in consultation with Ontario teacher advisers to provide a unique resource for students who need extra help with homework or preparation for EQAO tests.

CareerMATTERS

CareerMATTERS is a virtual guidance counselor that will help students plan their path through high school and beyond. The high school section provides course information and features a "Student Planner", to store information on courses in which the student is interested, on those which they have completed, etc. The After High School section is a complete reference guide to post-secondary options. The Career and Career Video sections house hundreds of job descriptions and video job profiles. CareerMATTERS is an initiative of TV Ontario, developed in consultation with the Ontario Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities.

So, go ahead - Ask a Teacher and find out all you need to know about CareerMATTERS, at www.ilc.org

Ontario Education Number

In 2002-2003, the Ministry of Education implemented the Ontario
Education Number (OEN), a 9-digit numerical identifier assigned
to students in the province's publicly-funded elementary
and secondary schools. This year, numbers have been assigned to
students in private schools.

Over time, you will see the OEN on a number of education-related
forms; you can already find it on the top right hand
corner of ISNA High report cards.

Procedures are in place to ensure that the confidentiality of students' personal information is protected. The OEN will be used only for educational purposes.

The OEN will also be a key tool for collecting accurate and timely
information about education for the purposes of policy and decision-making.

Guest Speakers at ISNA High

Accounting and Career Studies students participated in two interactive sessions related to the accounting profession in March 2004. Our guest speakers were from the Certified General Accountant (CGA) and Certified Management Accountant (CMA) professional associations, and outlined the path to becoming a CGA or CMA. These interesting presentations may be instrumental in producing future finance wizards from ISNA High…

For more information about these organizations, visit www.cga-canada.org and www.cma-canada.org

ISNA High students gained further insight into the career world when Muslim author Rukhsana Khan visited ISNA High in March. She addressed the students about her experiences, about the process of becoming a writer, and about the importance of Canadian Muslims getting involved in this field. And in April, Mrs. Nahid Lakhani and Dr. Farouk Ghany, parents of Grade 10 students, spoke to our Career Studies students, sharing their respective experience as an entrepreneur and a medical doctor.

Thanks to all our guests for their inspirational contribution to ISNA High!

Registration - Current Students

Early Registration for current students entering Grades 10-12 next fall will be held from May 11 to June 11, 2004.

The ISNA Islamic School Board has decided not to increase tuition fees for 2004-2005. They have also decided to phase out the existing textbook deposit and loan sys-tem, which will be discontinued as of September 2005. The 2004-2005 school year will therefore be the last during which books will be loaned.

To reserve their child/ward's space for next year, parents and guardians should make sure to return the green Registration Form sent home with the students on May 10, along with the required post-dated cheques.
