Orientation and Awards Night
On October 15, 2003, ISNA High School held its second Orientation and Awards
Night
in the presence of parents, students, their siblings and relatives, as
well as ISNA Islamic School Board trustees. We were pleased to host in
excess of 300 guests for the evening. We thank you for your interest in, and
support of our children's education.
The evening provided an opportunity for participants to become acquainted with
the Ontario Ministry of Education's requirements for the Ontario Secondary.
School Diploma (OSSD) and how ISNA High School's curriculum program
meets these requirements.
The evening's program also included recognition of students who excelled in
various subjects in the 2002/ 2003 school year. Certificates of Excellence were
awarded to students who achieved a mark of 80 percent or above in a subject.
Students with the highest mark in a subject received a Top Student Award
plaque. Students with an overall average of 80 percent or higher were awarded
special plaques, and their names are engraved on the Principal's Honour Roll
display in the school lobby.

Committee Teacher Advisor:
Holidays & Extended Absences, Attendance
In December, a letter was sent home to all students' parents and guardians,
regarding holidays and extended absences. The letter was a reminder
of school policies concerning notification of the school and issues
related to missed work and examinations, in cases where
families choose to leave for an extended period of time in order to
go on holidays, for example, outside the regularly scheduled school
breaks.
A separate letter was also sent to parents/guardians of individual students who had accumulated a high number of lates or absences
in the
first three months of school this year. The minimum hours of instruction
requirements of the credit-granting process was explained to them, that
they may have time to remedy the problem in time for the student to
improve their punctuality/attendance and risk not getting their course
credits.
Ramadan Challenge at ISNA High
Once again, as part of the Ramadan spirit of drawing closer to Allah (SWT) through learning, ISNA High students participated in a
daily quiz
about Islam. Students were given questions at the end of each school
day and asked to submit their answers the following morning. They
were encouraged to find the correct answers through independent
research or by consulting others. Students responded with great
enthusiasm, and involved many members of their families in learning,
teaching and refreshing their knowledge about various aspects of
Islam. A number of students won prizes for doing well in the quizzes.
Thank you, Sister Heba, for mounting the Challenge, and all
school staff for showing the same kind of enthusiasm as the students.
Eid Celebrations at ISNA High
ISNA High students celebrated the happy occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr with a
school party. With guidance from their teachers, the Yearbook
Committee organized the entire event. They planned activities and the food to be served and executed
the plan marvellously. Instead of school uniforms, students wore their
ethnic dresses on the day of the party, presenting a mosaic of the many
ethno-cultural groups represented in the school. Students participated in
organized activities. Later in the day, prizes were distributed for the
Ramadan Challenge.
We are pleased to post the winners:
1 st Place Eman Al-Qasimi
2 nd Place Mustafa Atasever
3 rd Place Ilham Hafizovic
4 th Place Ahsan Ali
5 th Place Abdul Basith Siddiqui
Usman Murtaza
7 th Place Abu Bakar Khan
8 th Place Omar Hindy
9 th Place Fatima Zafar
10 th Place Efa Syed
Congratulations, masha' Allah!
Guest Speakers at ISNA High
Two guests from the University of York Science Speakers Bureau were
invited to ISNA High this semester.
Professor Robert Burns addressed the Grade 11 class on the subjects of
Infinity and Number Theory.
Professor Martin Muldoon spoke to all students the following week, on
Careers in Mathematics, and Mathematics in Careers.
Students had many questions for the speakers and gained much
information through these special presentations.
Co-Curricular Activities
As school is open until 4:05, students are encouraged and reminded to
utilize the time for their homework and projects, and to
make full use of the facilities at their disposition:
Teachers' help, Library, Computer lab, Gym, Art Club.
November through January, students are also expected to join the
congregation for Salatul Asr, if they are still on school property at
Adhan time.
ISNA High Staff Updates
Promotion
We are happy to announce that ISNA Islamic School Board appointed Sr.
Marya Naeem to the position of Acting Vice-Principal, last June. She
started working in this new administrative capacity this past
semester, while she continues to teach.
Farewells
We bade farewell to two of our full-time teachers this past few months:
Sr. Heba Attia (Islamic Studies, Mathematics) left for Egypt, where
she got married in December. Before her departure, the Yearbook
Committee incorporated a beautiful tribute to Sr. Heba, in the Eid party
they organized.
Br. Abdulkadir Dirie (Biology,
Chemistry, Science) moved overseas as well, to care for his ailing mother
in the U. K.
May Allah (SWT) grant them success in their new homes and may He bless them and their families with health and happiness.
Welcome Back
Welcome back, Sr. Samar El-Roz Taleb, who has returned after an
extended parental leave. She joined us this past semester, taking over
teaching of the Mathematics and Physical Education courses.
Part-Time Staff
As a small school, we like to offer various course options to students
each year. On occasion, we hire part-time teachers to provide a range of choices.
Welcome, Srs. Hameeda Zain (Visual
Arts, Gr. 11) and Fawzia Alam (Science, Gr. 9) and Br. Moaz Ahmad
(Biology, Chemistry, Gr. 11) who joined us this past semester, adding
their talents and energy to our team.
This coming semester will also bring new additions to the ISNA High team
as three eminently qualified brothers will be starting in February: Dr.
Mohammad Khadim (Physics, Gr. 11), Br. Bilal Rashid (Introduction to
Financial Accounting, Gr. 11) and Br. Ayman Al-Taher (Islamic
Studies). We look forward to their contribution.
We take this opportunity to thank Sr. Ramullah Kasozi for her dynamic
performance as Physical Education teacher for start of Semester 1,
partway through which she left us to pursue medical studies in Uganda.
Other part-time teacher departures include Br. Asif Zaidi who is now
teaching at U of Waterloo, Sr. Nasrin Vakil who is working full-time in a
GTA school, and Sr. Maha Chishti who is currently devoting her full
time to her two daughters. Thank you, all.
To all of these teachers and to Sr. Lubna Ahmed and Br. Wajih Abdul-Ghani,
Jazak Allahu Khair. Your precious contribution has, and
continues to enrich academic, social and spiritual life at ISNA High School.
ISNA High School Library
By the grace of Allah (SWT), the ISNA High School Library is now being set up. We have been blessed to receive generous donations of new
Islamic books and money from some community members and parents.
Using these donated funds, the school has been able to begin
purchasing books from school staff wish lists.
Much work remains to be done on this wonderful project however, and
we need strong financial support from parents and the community.
If you would like to make in-kind donations of new books rather than
monetary donations, Sr. Solange Waithe, our Office Assistant, will be
pleased to guide you in your selection. She can be reached at
(905) 403-8406 Ext. 300.
Our hope is to develop a varied and rich collection that will benefit our
students and staff to the maximum.
We urge our readers to help us achieve this goal by contributing
generously to the ISNA High School Library, using the donation slip
below.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Acquire knowledge, and teach
it to people; learn your religious obligations and teach them to people;
learn the Qur'an and teach it to people'. (Darimi)
